"Enrollment in academic schools in the last few years – across the country – is not where it should be," Concepción said. "And to achieve that goal, I must work directly with the faculty and my team to make sure the needs of the students are met."
A major barrier for aspiring teachers is the cost of their degree. For many students, it doesn't make sense to take out thousands of dollars in student loans to work in a certain field for consistently low wages.

Education reporter Kate Payne spoke with Concepción about the challenges of recruiting students and keeping teachers in the classroom.
: Definitely for MDK students, many of them work. Some are supporting their families while trying to go back to school. When you have these conversations with students, what do you notice about what barriers exist or what is stopping them from learning?
Concept: In elementary school, I have students who don't do internships yet because they have to save enough money to stop working and go on internships. This… this is unacceptable.

Here in Padron, when I…come to work [from 8 am to 5 pm], there are not many students. But when I stay late or come on a Saturday, the campus is full. This means our students work. They support themselves and support their families. So, we have to find ways to help them finish school.
And somehow to clarify this convention – now, as a rule, when student teachers enter the classroom, learn to teach, they are not paid. But it is changing here at MDC with this partnership. What are your hopes for this program and your vision for more students to become teachers in the classroom?
The goal is to hire them as full-time teachers and be paid the same salary as any new teacher in the school system.

Once they get their internship, they will be hired full-time. They will have an associate teacher who is also a certified mentor who can help them along the way. So yes, they are in a class of their own. But they have an experienced teacher holding their hand, and it's the same experience as mine.
I am the teacher I am today because I had a group of people…when I was a teacher who held my hand and helped me become the teacher I could be.
We know that there is a lot of political pressure on education right now, some legislators, some activists, parents on curriculum, books, and how teachers deal with race and identity in the classroom. And some teachers say that's part of what's making them rethink how they think about working in the field. Is this what the MDC is communicating to students when it comes to navigating the political landscape?

We have a diversity course that all students in the School of Education take. The focus of the course is to meet the needs of all our students, regardless of politics and regardless of… we're talking about students. It's about making a difference for every student in Miami-Dade County.
In my three months here at Miami-Dade College, that was out of the question. We truly care that our students are prepared. We ensure that our students pass the certification exams. We meet their needs when they are born. We meet them where they are. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, I just haven't seen it.
What is your message to your district, elected officials, legislators about what it takes to keep your high school graduates in the classroom?

We all talk about money. We all need more money. We are going through difficult times. But I think I've always believed that the key is the support we give our teachers. The key is the relationships we make along the way. It is what makes us who we are. And that's what keeps us in class.
Because if you are indebted to the teacher who supported you, and you are responsible for the students in your class, you have a responsibility to the community… you will continue to do a great job. But you should be respected. And your voice must be heard.
