The first Belmont Stakes were held at Jerome Park racetrack in the Bronx, built in 1866 by stock speculator Leonard Jerome and sponsored by August Belmont Sr., the race's namesake. The Ruthless Woman won the first tournament in 1867, and the General Duke won the following year. The event was held at Jerome Park until 1890, when it was moved to Morris Park Racecourse due to new rules for betting in New York. The competition in 1895 was almost cancelled. Later, it was rescheduled to 2 November.
