District 200 Calendar 2023 24 – A proposal for next year's Springfield school calendar calls for a full Thanksgiving week for all students and staff and one last day in May.
For many years, even in this district, classes were released only on the Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of Thanksgiving week, and each year the last day of school was a question mark until spring break

Details of the proposed 2022-23 calendar were sent Tuesday to the school board, which will then vote to accept or reject it.

Jason "J" Anderson, executive director of the elementary school, said the proposal was developed with input from teachers, parents, school and district leaders and local higher education officials.
The first day of school is Aug. 22, the earliest date allowed under Missouri legislation in 2019 that prohibited districts from starting the school year 14 days before the first Monday in September.
"This has nothing to do with schools and learning," Anderson said, citing the Tourism Industry Initiative legislation.

He said the fall semester is 80 days and the spring semester 92 days because of the longer practice of having a later start date and ending the fall semester in late December instead of early January .
While shortening the fall semester is ideal, ending fall classes in late December is the best option due to the number of high school students taking dual credit and other courses at Ozarks Technical Community College and Missouri State University, Anderson said.
"We have a lot of high school students who have to finish the (fall) semester before winter," he said.

Board members asked questions and expressed concern about the slight change in semesters. Anderson said he feels the same about teachers.
"It's an ongoing concern," he said. "That's why we must … continue to advocate for the return of local control over when school calendars begin."
This year, the district had to create a schedule to meet the minimum number of instructional hours: 1,044.

"We've put over 1,100 hours into all of our divisions — elementary, middle and high school," he said.
In addition to breaks around Thanksgiving and Christmas, the district will cancel classes for Labor Day, Martin Luther King Day, President's Day and Memorial Day.
Next school year, after past experience, the district planned for spring break, which cannot be avoided.

"Many of our colleagues have embraced it in neighboring districts, but some have not yet," Anderson said. "And when you share with family or students or faculty or staff, sometimes it's hard. So we always respect that."
Spring break is scheduled for March 13-17. The fourth and final term of the year begins when students return from this break.
Built-in make-up days aren't necessary because the district uses school hours, not days, to create its new calendar, Anderson said.
