UMD strengthened its position among the top 20 public schools in the United States and the World Report's "Best Colleges" report, moving up one spot to No. 19. Board Of Education Approves 2023 2024 Academic Calendar
Interim Superintendent Hugh Hattabugh will consider input on the two proposed academic calendars and make recommendations to the school board. Board members will vote on one of the calendars 2023-24 November 9.
There is an online survey at cmsk12.org. Select "parents and students" then "survey". The survey is anonymous and closes on Wednesday. Participants can choose between calendar option A and option B.

In both calendar proposals for 2023-24 – option A or B – the first day of school is Monday, August 28, and the last day of school is Friday, June 7, 2024.
Both calendars list the same number of days off for students and teachers. The number of teacher working days will be the same, but fall on different days depending on the calendar option.
The CMS calendar committee was asked to build in an additional six days to allow for early discharge and skip dressing days.

The biggest difference between option A and option B is the length of winter break and spring break for students. In option A, winter break starts on December 21, 2023 to January 2, 2024. Students will return to class on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. Tuesday, January 2, 2024, is a teacher's working day.
In option B, winter break for students will start on December 20, 2023 and last until January 2, 2024. Students will return to class on Wednesday, January 3, 2024. But December 20 and December 21 coincide with January 2, 2024, which are teachers' working days. .
While spring break begins on Monday, April 1, 2024 and runs through Friday, April 5, 2024 for both options, Option A includes two days off for students the previous week, March 28 and 29, which are also teachers' work days.

School officials in Montgomery County, Maryland, and Arlington, Virginia, are in the process of developing calendars for the next school year, because some parents in the DC area say the current calendar includes too many holidays.

Dana Edwards, district head of operations in Montgomeryshire, told a meeting this week that when considering calendar options for 2023-2024, there was a lot more to think about than when the first and last day of school should be.
Dates have to be considered, he says, "in the context of who benefits from this, and who loses?"
Since planning for next year's calendar began, school officials have held focus group meetings with more than 1,000 participants, according to school board documents.

More than a third of those who responded to the survey favored a start date of August 28, 2023 and an end date of June 18, 2024.

In Arlington, the school board is scheduled to be notified of calendar choices for the first time next week. Inspector Francisco Duran's proposed options include a start date of August 21 and an end date of mid-June.
Virginia requires all school systems to have 180 school days each year or a total of 990 hours of instruction.

Many of the responses to the Arlington Public Schools calendar survey called for the school system to adopt a calendar similar to that in neighboring jurisdictions.
"While I understand the need to include religious holidays, I would recommend removing most/all rather than so many," said one commenter.
Prince William County Schools received a similar response regarding religious holidays when they created their 2023-2024 calendar. Earlier this month, school board member Jennifer Wall questioned whether Virginia's second-largest school system had too many days off on its calendar.

"I know for working parents, it can be difficult to find daycare for some days," says Wall. "And many don't have many personal days off from their jobs to stay home for those random vacations."
The Prince William County school board recently voted to approve the 2023-2024 calendar, which includes an August 21 start date and a June 7 end date.
In a bulletin earlier this week, Fairfax County Schools Board member Melanie Meren said talks on next year's calendar were expected to start in January.
