The letter, dated Dec. 22, comes after more than 900 members of the university community wrote an open letter to University President Mark Schlissel to postpone on-site COVID-19 training for Omicron due to the rapid spread of the virus.
The Dec. 22 letter said there was no evidence that delaying the start of school might impact the spread of COVID-19 and that in-person instruction would be unhealthy for students or staff.
"There are no reliable data to suggest that this new strain poses a significant risk to our vaccinated populations," the letter said. "Students and staff have played their part by vaccinating, and by changing the academic calendar or teaching methods, university administrations will not be able to support their outcomes. There is no conclusive data or evidence that individual training poses a significant risk to the population."

The letter states that virtual learning is inferior to face-to-face learning, and that valuable experiences such as networking and social opportunities are lost by taking classes remotely.
"The purpose of this letter is not to embarrass university administration. Rather, this letter proposes a compromise in which the university will continue to allow individual education due to a 98% vaccination rate for students and staff," the letter reads road. "The student body is willing to ignore mask mandates and incentive requirements if the University commits to continuing to provide a high-quality, individualized education. We expect the University will continue to make informed decisions to maintain current policies for the Winter 2022 semester."
In a statement to The Michigan Journal, university spokesman Rick Fitzgerald said the university has one of the highest vaccination rates among students and staff in the United States. The university currently plans to resume all in-person classes on January 5.

"The University plans to begin individual classes on January 5. There are currently no plans to switch to a remote model for the start of the winter term," Fitzgerald wrote. "Michigan's student body and faculty have some of the highest vaccination rates in the state and the nation."
Fitzgerald wrote that the university will continue to monitor the spread of the Omicron strain and will continue to seek guidance from public health experts. He added that there has been little transmission of COVID-19 in classrooms.
LSA sophomore Drew Joliet and business sophomore Mitchell Reinitz, the two lead authors of the letter, told the Daily Mail that they wrote the letter to express support for individual groups, particularly the student middle. Joliet and Reinitz point to high vaccination rates and promotional requirements as the main reasons they believe delaying school or going online for a while.
Issues Of The Environment: Climate Change And Weather For The Coming Winter
"When we saw a letter from some members of the Michigan community saying that the academic calendar could be changed and individual classes postponed, we came to the conclusion that we thought (our letter) would be a good answer to show the University , we believe individual classes should start on time and the academic calendar should remain the same," Joliet said.
"It's really hard to interact with your classmates when you're in a real environment," Reinitz said. "We pay for individual classes, and I think that's what we deserve."
"When I'm in the classroom, I feel like I'm learning more than I'm learning online," Joliet said. "It allows you to focus on your schoolwork rather than the distractions around you."
