I hope you and Duke all have a good rest and can spend time together. We welcome them back to campus and the new beginnings that a new semester brings.

There is a lot of new information in this letter, and I hope we can share it to support your students' success and beyond.

There are several important dates, including spring assessment days, spring testing (March 13-17) and early May. You and your student can check the academic calendar for more specific information.

One of the biggest things I did was get a full-time job as an RA during my sophomore year and worked in catering for three and a half years. I didn't know the job would launch me into a career, but it did. One of the best things I've learned is how to manage my time. When I came to university, I really struggled with the freedom and lack of structure of university, and I didn't do well in my first year of classes.

Jmu Officially Joins Sun Belt Conference

I know many families don't want their children to work because they worry about time and schedule, but for many students, the job structure is college and they are responsible for paying their regular expenses. This is their dream. For students who are still trying to find their community on campus, this goal is also a great event. Many institutions offer $12 per spring semester, which is a great way to earn money and help with the day-to-day expenses of college. Students should check out Joblink and apply for jobs that interest them. They also need interviews, so bring some interview clothes in January.

I know some students are struggling this fall, which is an especially difficult time for first-year students dealing with the many changes that come with college life. Some of your students failed academic tests based on their classroom work this fall, and we want to help. The Revival Program in the Office of the Dean of Students has organized a program to help students see their success through weekly activities during the spring semester. I am excited to work with them during this process and plan to attend more sessions and mentor individual students.

We believe that a student who fully commits to this course, attends it every week, and wants to change their life and attitude, will succeed. In the past, most students have shown improvements in time management, class performance, increased GPA, and enjoyment of the experience. This program is not easy, but we believe it will make a real difference to students. I hope you will encourage your students to participate in this program, and I hope they will participate this spring.

The obstacles your student will face over time are varied. These may be challenges in education, difficulties with mental/physical health or social issues. If you know your student is struggling in some way and could use some help, please contact Madison Caris. Our Student Director will contact your student to support them and connect them with appropriate resources. We will also follow up with the sender after our visit.

If you contact me directly about your student's concerns, I will refer you to Madison Care to provide information. This group was created to help with these concerns and move them as quickly as possible, and it is important to bring these concerns together. If you have questions about Madison Cares or how to best support your student, please call 540-568-6468 or email madisoncares.

If this is your student's first year living on campus, they may be surprised to find that the parking lot hasn't been plowed or that their car is buried in it after the first snow. My suggestion is to bring them back with a snow shovel so they can become the most famous person in the complex. It always makes me sad when students use pots and pans to fill their cars. You may hear from their students that their car is "buried", but if the lines are clear they can expect us to continue teaching. Don't forget gloves, boots and a heavy jacket. The weather is unpredictable, but I can say it will be cold and snowy.

Madison Family Newsletter: January 2023

We, like everyone else in our community, have seen incidents happen, and it's important that we communicate with our students so they know how to protect themselves during these times. We've seen some students ignore this information, so we want to remind them how important it is to understand what's going on and not get distracted by it. They and you should download the LiveSafe app on your phone so you can receive notifications about emergencies that affect our community.

Hint: This leads to a more in-depth conversation about finding their position, sign, or future plans. I encourage you to cross out the "I don't know" answers. Most of our students come up with a goal only when they are at a disadvantage. Set goals for success before you try.

Tip: Staying is also an option. Do your research before signing an off-campus contract. Here are some helpful tips for off-campus life. Many students sign leases, but you should do your research before registering your student.

Hint: Some are planning to travel with friends, some are planning to stay off campus, and some are planning to go home. It is important that you all discuss this before doing anything, especially flights, hotels, etc. I still encourage them to hire me for most of these jobs. They celebrate and prepare for the future. Don't forget to check out our filters. These are the most beneficial parts of my experience and I recommend them to all students.

BeInvolved has information on our incoming student welcome week, as well as all student events on the program calendar.

One event is Student Organization Night on January 19, which is open to all students and is a great way to get to know the many groups on campus. This is a great starting point for students who want to meet new people and learn different ways to get involved.

Application deadline is January 29. The more benefits, the better the skills gained. Not to mention, it looks fantastic!

The Madison Scholarship Hub is the application center for all scholarships at James Madison University. To access the Madison Scholarship Hub, students visit MyMadison and click on the Madison Scholarship Hub icon under the Student tab. Admission to most of our scholarships is based on simple application information and information taken directly from your student's transcript. Deadlines vary by department, so complete your application as early as possible. Carefully review the criteria for the recommended scholarship opportunity that will be sent to your student, and if your student meets the criteria, click Apply and submit the additional information requested. The scholarship will open next January. Many scholarships require financial need, so if you haven't already done so, be sure to file the 2023-24 FAFSA now. Your student may be barred from receiving/applying for select scholarships without a FAFSA on file.
