As President Valerie Shears Ashby looked out over the excited crowd of freshmen at Tuesday's opening assembly, she emphasized the importance of marking the seasons. And with more than 2,100 freshmen and a record number of graduate and international students, it's a new chapter for the largest incoming class.

In addition to a record number of freshmen, more than 3,300 graduate students applied for fall 2022, a dramatic increase of more than 500 from last fall's enrollment.

One of the biggest goals in the first few weeks of the new academic year is to provide students with an opportunity to familiarize themselves with the campus and begin learning about the facilities available in their academic careers.

A strong welcome week full of fun and exciting events is an important part of this experience. When the new students went home last Saturday, they were treated to some of their favorite traditions. If the new retrievers didn't know the school colors before, they certainly do now. The floor was lined with sales desks, information desks and elegant tables, all decorated in black and gold. Even the animals at the zoo got a memo.
Something in their eyes, the festivities continued with Playfair and the annual fireworks display. New Retriever plays a "get to know you" game to break the ice and end the night with a spectacular fireworks display.
A Luther Daigle transfer student majoring in mechanical engineering summed up the feeling of listening versus achieving by saying, "It wasn't until I walked around campus and felt a strong sense of belonging that I knew I wanted to continue my academic career at the university. And that feeling continued at the start of his first semester.

This sense of belonging extends to the growing population of international students. By the end of August, more than 2,200 international students had applied for the 2022-2023 academic year.

Among Dean Kimberly Moffitt's new students admitted to this year's School of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences (CAHSS) are several Shriver Peace Fellows, who gathered on campus Aug. 1 to begin their fellowships. These returning Peace Corps Volunteers earn degrees in a variety of disciplines (such as teaching and applied sociology) while working with community partner organizations to address a variety of societal needs and actively reflect on their learning and engagement experiences.
This multifaceted approach demonstrates how classroom work, hands-on learning, community engagement, and service connect to shape unique student experiences.

While new family members look forward to the year ahead, many also look back on the people and moments that brought them there. Speaking on campus for the first time in early fall, Shires Ashby shared the lessons his mentor has taught him throughout his life.
