Uop Calendar 2023 – The university's annual Black History Month celebration includes a variety of activities honoring the history and heritage of African Americans and the African diaspora. The University of the Black History Month Planning Committee presents the 2023 Black History Month Celebration.
The event calendar includes our featured speakers: LaRussell – San Francisco Bay Area independent hip-hop artist and entrepreneur; and former NBA star Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, who is featured in the documentary "Stand," to be released February 3; virtual panel discussion led by Vice President for Diversity, Equality and Inclusion/Professor or Communication Dr. Mary Lomax-Ghirarduzzi; book reading and discussion on black history and theater with author/professor Macelle Mahal; and a series of discussions and events organized by the Center for Identity and Inclusion. A health fair sponsored by the Abbott Fund, Future Well Communities (small symbol "TM") will be held at the Progressive Community Church in Stockton. Faculty and students from the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy will facilitate the comprehensive service-based health fair. Services offered include free health screenings and vaccinations against COVID-19. The McGeorge School of Law is hosting its annual Diversity Week from June 6-10. February.

Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf will be interviewed by Men's Basketball Director Leonard Perry on February 21, 2023 at 19.00. in Faye Spano's Concert Hall. Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf is an activist and former NBA star whose life journey will be shared in Showtime's documentary "Stand," which premieres February 3. The author of Kaepernick Publishing's autobiography, "In the Blink of an Eye: An Autobiography," continues the fight for justice. Abdul-Rauf first came to public attention as a freshman sensation at Louisiana State University, then known as Chris Jackson. Despite Tourette's syndrome, he turned pro after his sophomore year, was drafted third overall by the Denver Nuggets in 1990, and converted to Islam.

LaRussell is an independent hip-hop artist and entrepreneur from the San Francisco Bay Area. He will perform at the DeRosa University Center on February 10, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. The lecture is free, but the number of places is limited.
: LaRussell's musical journey began as a kid writing raps with his older sister, spending most of his time in high school writing, making beats and battle rapping. His independent collective and production company "Good Compenny" helps other independent artists successfully launch their careers. After releasing 3 successful albums in 2021, he announced that he is selling parts of his music catalog to fans, allowing them to start earning passive income by streaming his music. Stockton Soul, a local music collective made up of high school students, students and alumni, will perform as the event's opening act.
Faculty member Professor Macelle Mahala will host a special reading and discussion of her latest book, Black Theatre, Life in the City. A rich study of contemporary African American theater institutions reveals how they reflect and shape the historical and cultural reality of their sites. Black Theatre, City Life looks at Karamu House Theatre, August Wilson African American Cultural Center, Pittsburgh Playwrights Theater Company, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre, African American Shakespeare Company, Atlanta Black Theater Festival and Kenny Leon's True Colors Theater Company. show how each organization expresses the diversity of African American culture, socio-political reality and history. Professor Mahala will read extracts from her book, followed by a Q&A with the audience. The event will be held on February 7 from 16:30-19:00 at the Alex & Jeri Vereschagin Alumni House. Part of this event is a reception where you can meet the author. This event is free and open to all.

Shetona D Jordan began her nursing career as a CNA in 1979 at Rosecrans SNF on the night shift, Shetona worked as a CNA at night and attended school during the day. In 1982, she was hired by Kaiser Permanente and within 6 months received her LVN results and began her nursing career. She graduated from Cerritos College in 1989 with an ADN in Nursing. Shetona continued to attend school and graduated from CSUDH in 1996 with a BSN and PHN in Nursing. In 2007, she received a master's degree specializing in nursing education at the University of Warsaw. Shetona is currently a DNP candidate for GCU leadership.
Shetona is currently an adjunct instructor at the American University of Health Sciences. He recently retired as an executive from Kaiser Permanente after 32 years of service. He really enjoyed his last years at Kaiser Permanente (minus the last 2) because during this time he was able to focus on redefining his educational direction and goals. Shetona feels very blessed to have had such a wonderful career in nursing. He worked at various institutions and was able to develop and implement a Diabetic Foot Program for Kaiser Permanente that spread throughout Southern California. Shetona was instrumental in the development and transition of the Kaiser training program in various roles within his units. This transition into education has been a blessing for Shetona as she feels she can be instrumental in the education and training of new nurses.
Marco Attenello is a member of the nursing faculty at the American University of Health Sciences. Since 2015, she is a practical trained nurse with a focus on medical surgery and telemetric nursing. She is currently focused on conducting research on improving and applying nursing simulation to effectively supplement clinical experiences in nursing school.

Trained ambulatory community pharmacist with 20 years experience in pharmacy management, community practice and drug therapy management. Before joining the company, Dr. Transon Nguyen worked in a pharmaceutical practice working with independent pharmacies and non-profit clinics on drug information, formulary and medication management and compliance practices. He managed several community pharmacies and mentored many pharmacists and trainees.
Said Dr. Transon Nguyen is actively involved in teaching school children and seniors about medication safety, adherence, basic self-care and health care. He is an active community volunteer for the Red Cross and the City of Irvine Emergency Response Team.
