UW-Eau Claire Associate Director of Marketing and Communications Michael Knuth told the Leader-Telegram in an email that 10 of the 15 students were already in isolation or quarantine as of Tuesday afternoon, the day before school started.

Knuth said 14 of those 15 students are in quarantine, so they may have been in close contact with someone who tested positive for COVID-19. One is in isolation, meaning the student is symptomatic and awaiting test results or has already been diagnosed with the virus.

"Students who have no known contact with someone with COVID-19 may be allowed to quarantine, especially if they are not sharing restrooms with other students," Knutt said. "There are a myriad of scenarios and Student Health Services, the City of Eau Claire Health Department and health care providers are in consultation to determine the appropriate course of action in each case."

Many U.S. college campuses are seeing spikes in COVID-19 cases during the first days or weeks of in-person classes. The New York Times' coronavirus tracker indicates that cases have also been reported at other University of Wisconsin campuses: 128 at Marquette University in Milwaukee, 58 at UW-Milwaukee and 18 at UW-Whitewater since the outbreak began in March. The Times' analysis reportedly "missed almost a certain number."

UW-Eau Claire students will be required to self-quarantine for two weeks in Putnam Hall if they test positive for the respiratory virus, according to the university. They will also be able to go to their parents' homes while they recover, Quincy Chapman, UW-Eau Claire's director of housing and residence, told the Leader-Telegram in July.

A similar dashboard for UW-Madison shows 208 people tested positive on its campus Thursday for a total of 12,300.

According to Gov. Tony Evers' office, the twelve universities in the UW system will share $32 million in testing programs, excluding UW-Madison itself. The UW System plans to use the antigen test for students in the dorms, a method that produces results every 15 minutes every two weeks but can produce false negatives. Students who get positive antigen test results are then told to do the PCR test, which is known to be more accurate but can take a day or more to get results from the lab.

The pandemic has disrupted the studies and campus experience of all students, but for many it has also blocked the typical paths that would lead them to their first job after graduation. Many internships were canceled, companies were hiring fewer new employees, and usual networking opportunities such as campus career fairs were canceled or virtual.

Heidetke says that despite the problems, Bluegolds remain in demand. With the help and support of faculty and staff, UW-Eau Claire students continue to gain the knowledge and experience that sets them apart when applying for internships and jobs.
