New Mask Guidelines for Students: As of Monday, January 17th, disposable masks will no longer be accepted. If students choose to wear a cloth mask, they will be required to wear a surgical mask. Students have the option to wear an N95 or KN95 mask. There will be surgical masks.

Back to school after the holidays was a difficult time. If you can, send a small thank-you note to your child's teacher, fill someone's bucket with kind words, or do a random act of kindness with your family.

We need your help at the Gardens at Valley View. In the summer we work on the school garden. The first set of deer fence structures is complete (see photos on the Valley View Elementary School Community Facebook page), and the fence will be added later in August with the construction of the second deer fence structure. Ergonomics! When students are doing homework at home, be sure to set up a relatively quiet place for them to work. Here are some ergonomic guides suitable for both children and adults.

Throughout the summer, WCCUSD offers free breakfast and lunch to children 18 and under. All children have the right to food, regardless of family income and school attendance. The district has 21 lunch sites, including De Anza Middle School, Dejean Middle School, Pinole Valley High School, Richmond High School and others, Monday through Friday. United Teachers of Richmond/NEA stands with WCCUD, community organizations, youth to denounce hundreds of years of racism, discrimination and social injustice in our country. Black lives matter.

As a union of over 1,600 educators, we are committed to action. We must confront the fact that our schools, our practices, our politics, and even our own communities are shaped by inequality, prejudice, and institutionalized racism. We are hurt and angry. Together, we must continue to demand justice and hold people, institutions and each other accountable.

While it's important to raise awareness, participate in our community's outrage, and demand sweeping change, it's equally important to identify actions within our areas of expertise and authority that have made concrete and positive improvements. Earlier this week, State Superintendent Tony Thurmond challenged us to think about how public education is both a cause and a potential solution to the problem of systemic racism in our society. UTR will rise to this challenge and seek to integrate our work with our colleagues and allies in West Contra Costa. Please see below for the specific actions that UTR is seeking from WCCUSD during this time.

1. As WCCUSD educators and in support of youth and community demands, we request that the West Contra Costa Board of Education do the following:

School Is Starting And The Broadband Gap Will Be A Massive Problem

A. WCCUSD must immediately get rid of school resource officers and invest in our black students. This action will save $1.5 million in the 2020-2021 school year, which will be used to fund mentors specifically for our African American students and to fund the AASAT resolution passed by the WCCUSD Board of Education in Spring 2020. Must go WCCUSD must join one. A growing number of school districts across California have eliminated, reduced, or are considering eliminating or reducing police presence in schools. These include Los Angeles, Oakland, Coachella Valley, Pomona, Sacramento and Piedmont.

B. WCCUD. This summer should provide restorative justice practices and anti-racism training for educators. This can be done on our first PD day in August and will cover 12 hours of self-directed PD throughout the year and should be requested by both classroom teachers and site administrators as well as support staff. Need to help students directly.

C. WCCUSD provides a space for black teachers to share their thoughts, concerns, and needs. WCCUSD should respond directly with support. Such placements may be made through affinity groups conducted by WCCUSD and UTR.

D. WCCUSD will establish "Race and Equity" teams at each school. These teams review academic, disciplinary and attendance data, quality data, family feedback and school policies to make immediate changes to create anti-racist schools. Some of the recommendations could be professional development, ending racist school policies, providing interventions for students, more support for teachers, or more.

E. WCCUSD shall develop a plan to increase access to ethnic studies courses. It is important that our teaching allows students to learn about their history, and that our African American students rarely take courses that reflect their history toward graduation. We would like to see a way to expand these courses to all WCCUSD high schools and ensure that students have the opportunity to take these courses toward graduation.

A. UTR will use our own resources to continue professional development opportunities around anti-racist and restorative justice practices for all of our members, including NEA, and reach out to our community partners for tools.

B. UTR provides a space for Black educators to meet and discuss the challenges and issues they see in WCCUSD and how we can support these issues.

C. UTR will continue to support all actions taken by students, families, and community partners that promote change in the broader communities surrounding WCCUSD and Black Lives Matter.

D. UTR will participate in a district-wide book club in both the fall and spring to discuss anti-racism in education.

E. UTR reaffirms our commitment to the Black Lives Matter movement and the resolution in support of the campaign passed by the UTR Representative Council in 2018. UTR will spend $10,000 for support, tools and implementation of the above commitments. for the 2020-2021 academic year.

UTR stands with thousands of students, families, teachers and leaders in support of Black Lives Matter who are advocating for an end to police brutality across the United States, in California and within WCCUSD in all our cities. We stand with our students in encouraging the above demands of WCCUSD and hope that our superintendent, staff and Board of Education will stand with our youth and address these issues at the next Board of Education meeting.

(BCN) – West Coast Unified School District (WCCUD) announced Thursday that it has reached an impasse in contract negotiations with Richmond United Teachers and is suing. External mediation. WCCUSD said in a statement that the parties are "difficult to understand what a competitive wage offer would be while maintaining the district's financial solvency."

The district said it recently reached a tentative agreement with the Teamsters union that offered cumulative 10 percent raises through July 2023, as well as equity-based pay adjustments for hard workers that were well below the market rate. Teamsters Local 856 covers a wide range of essential positions, including food service workers, school community workers, school secretaries and custodians.

A similar offer of cumulative 10 percent raises through July 2023 was on the table for Richmond United Teachers, requiring district staff to work on models for potential budget cuts, the district said. These cuts will focus on eliminating staff vacancies and overtime, reducing or restructuring central office positions, and reducing materials, supplies, and contracts for all programs.

College- and career-oriented programs could also be affected, the district said. The Richmond Teachers Union said on its website that the district plans to lay off 160 teachers, principals and support staff.
