Traverse Heights Elementary School recently hosted its second annual Amazing Shake. The Amazing Challenge gives fifth graders invaluable experience to strengthen their connection to our community through a series of one-on-one interviews. After learning handshakes, eye contact, posture, etiquette and essential interview skills, all fifth graders participated in the first round of interviews with local volunteers. Seven students then advanced to the second round, and the two finalists received final interviews with Traverse City Mayor Richard Lewis and TCAPS Superintendent Dr. John Van Wagoner.
In the first phase of the interview, each 5th grade student went from volunteer to volunteer and spoke with them for about 2 minutes. After the speech of the students, they were asked prepared questions. Volunteers rated students on their empathy, charisma, confidence and communication skills.
The second round called "In the city" was held on Thursday, June 9. 7 best students went to the district library to complete five tasks. Their job was to orient and communicate professionally with others to find things they would need in the future.
