Women's Soccer Preview: Belmont & Murray State
The beautiful Nashville campus reflects a long, rich history dating back to the 19th century when the land was known as the Belle Monte estate of Adelicia Acklen. The Antebellum mansion remains and is surrounded by university buildings spaced a century apart. On their way to the classroom that will prepare them for the 21st century, students pass Victorian gardens, statues and pavilions that remind them of a cherished past.
Women's schools that preceded the current comprehensive institution include Belmont College (1890-1913) and Ward-Belmont (1913-1951). In 1951, the Tennessee Baptist Convention founded the second Belmont College (1951-1991), with an initial enrollment of 136 students. Shortly after celebrating 100 years of education at the university, the institution became a university in 1991 – ending a decade of dramatic growth and progress.
In addition to the many countries represented in its student body, Belmont University attracts students from nearly every state in the United States. The talent pool concentrated on the Belmont campus is celebrated when students achieve and faculty are recognized for their dedication to teaching. Belmont men's basketball has cut its 2021-22 schedule, which includes games against LSU, St. Louis and Drake University. The release also includes the complete Ohio Valley Conference schedule.
After going 26-4 last season and winning its 20th conference title since 2006 — third behind Kansas and Gonzaga-Belmont in that stretch — Belmont has become one of the best programs in Division I basketball.
"The schedule has been difficult for many reasons, but we are excited about how this year's non-conference schedule has come together," said head coach Casey Alexander. "We've been able to create a better balance between home games, away games and neutral side games and give our fans a chance to support us whether we're playing at the Curb (Event Center) or elsewhere."
Belmont To Join The Valley In 2022 23
Belmont opens its season Nov. 9 at Mid-American Conference champion Ohio State. From there, Belmont welcomes Evansville to the Curb Event Center on Nov. 13 for the home opener. After that, the Bruins host Southern Conference powerhouse Furman. One of the strongest mid-major programs in the country in recent seasons, the Paladins return 12 starters from a 16-9 team that played against Alabama and Cincinnati.
Belmont next travels to Kennesaw State on Nov. 19, which it beat last season, 64-53. Belmont will travel to the historic Pete Maravich Assembly Center to face LSU on Nov. 22, where Alexander will meet with LSU head coach and Nashville native Will Wade. for the first time in seven seasons.
The Bruins will then travel to Orlando, Florida to participate in the highly anticipated ESPN Invitational on Thanksgiving Day. They first play Drake on Nov. 25, followed by either Alabama or Iona. If Belmont wins the second game, it will play in the tournament final on Nov. 28.
Basketball Tigers Announce Non Conference Schedule For 2021 22 Season
"Thanksgiving week at LSU and the ESPN Events Invitational will be a big test against several top 50 teams," Alexander says. "We have some familiar opponents, but the new series Ohio, Furman and Chattanooga will be exciting and challenging. Overall, the schedule is full of programs looking forward to participating in March Madness next spring."
This year's Battle of the Boulevards will be played once, on Dec. 2, at the Curb Event Center instead of the usual two games in recent seasons. The rivalry between Belmont and Lipscomb dates back to the 1980s when both teams competed for NAIA championships. The Bruins have won 16 of their last 18 meetings, including an 81-71 victory last season.
Belmont travels to Birmingham to play at Samford on Dec. 5. In mid-December, Belmont faces Atlantic 10 Conference contender St. Louis in the West. Two seasons ago, the Bruins and Billikens played an extremely competitive game, with the Bruins leading in the final three minutes before scoring.
Belmont Hill School Plans To Pave Woodlands
To conclude the non-conference portion of the season, Belmont hosts Chattanooga on Dec. 15 and Bethel on Dec. 18. Belmont Athletic Hall of Famer and Bethel head coach Steve Drabin (2004) will be welcomed to the Curb Event Center. Drabin served on the staff of Alexander's Lipscomb from 2011 to 2019.
The Bruins play OVC on the road with SIUE on Dec. 30 and Eastern Illinois on Jan. 1. The Belmont Conference home opener will be against Southeast Missouri. The Bruins play each OVC team twice this season, once in Nashville and once on the road. Four of Belmont's final six games will be at the Curb Event Center, including Feb. 26 against Tennessee State.
"I expect a double-rotation conference schedule this year," says Alexander. "Our players meet Belmont's expectations and championship standards."

While at Belmont, he served as sports editor and managing editor of the Belmont Vision, the campus student newspaper, covering men's and women's basketball, including Rick Bird's retirement and the Bruins' first NCAA Tournament victory in 2019.
