While much of the book is a nostalgic trip down Elyria's memory, Ritchie does not shy away from exploring the problems facing the city, including the racial tensions and economic decline that led to Elyria's decline.

"We're now considered a heritage city because in the 21st century, cities like Lorraine and Elyria are going through a tough time. "We don't want to produce the way we used to produce," Rich said.

Ritchie details the opening of the Midway Mall in 1966, an event he describes as a "sea change" in urban terms.

"Midway Mall was a great place when it opened. We have Higbee's, Sears, Hough's Bakery. There are shops. It's just amazing. Everything is under one roof. The downside, however, is that one by one, downtown Elyria's best small shops have had to close their doors. They cannot compete. It was a big change. You see, because people who work downtown will go shopping at lunchtime, and soon there won't be many stores," Rich said.

"When you write, research, and study a place you thought you knew, you realize you don't know at all. One of the joys of writing this book is that I feel like I know Elyria now. I grew up there. I think I know. I didn't start this until I was an adult. "Now I know Elyria," Rich said.
