Indiana University Academic Calendar 2020 21 – Bloomington, Ind. – Indiana University welcomes students to its campus for the fall semester through May 2021 with a mix of in-person and online courses and a revised calendar.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie announced the plans for the 2020-21 academic year in a letter to the IU community today, and the announcement follows the IU Restart Committee's report to IU faculty and staff last week. Significant changes have been made to the academic calendar to ensure the safety of all IU students, faculty and staff during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Within this framework, many in-person courses that previously met entirely face-to-face will become blended courses with some online instruction. This provides an option for larger classes where social distancing is not possible. Reducing travel to and from campus will also help limit the number of people on campus during the months when concerns and issues related to the coronavirus complicate the season.

"As we have said many times, the health and safety of IU students, faculty and staff is our top priority," McRobbie said in a message to IU students, faculty and staff. "We have taken a methodical and considered approach to developing our plans for the new academic year and are confident in the best health and safety systems available."

The plan is very simple. Instead of taking torts, civil procedure, and contract courses in a 13-week semester, 1L students take one course at a time in compact four-week blocks, with a final exam after each block. Small-part legal research and writing courses are offered during the semester as are block courses as well as one-credit online legal business courses.

I am grateful to our faculty and staff who worked around the clock to pull this project together in such a short time. But even the best laid plans (including this one) can fail unless other factors are taken into account.
