Cape Cod Continued: "40 Years After the Mast: An Ever-Evolving Cape Cod Landscape" with Bob Prescott
Bob Prescott has had many opportunities to observe, teach and care for the Cape Cod landscape in his 40 years. He graduated from UMass with a degree in biological biology, trained at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, and retired after 35 years as a sanctuary manager at Mass Audubon's Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Refuge. Prescott looks at changes in fauna – sea turtles, horseshoe crabs, diamondback turtles, etc. – that reflect environmental changes that have occurred in the Outer Cape as a whole and as a result of the national sea. It will also look at current and future environmental projects such as salt marshes and grassland restoration, as well as wildlife that needs our help.

In this program, Superintendent Carlstrom will highlight the many projects that will be completed in 2022, including the park's return to normal operations following the COVID-19 pandemic, the Nauset Light Beach Relief Project, and the Highland Light Restoration Project, which enhances park cohesion. , updates on the ORV route and the Shorebird Park Management Plan, and the park's Senior Advisory Committee.
Superintendent Carlstrom will also review 2023 and provide plans and updates on the Herring River Restoration Project; continue to work with the White Shark Work Group to help reduce public concern about white sharks; maintenance of the Beech Forest road and the Small Swamp Road; and other projects of the future park. For the past 30 years, Bill Burke has served as Cape Cod's maritime historian in various capacities, including helping researchers and educators access the park's archives, historic photographs and artifacts. In fact, the National Park Service has already floated the idea of creating a national beach on the wild, undeveloped land of Cape Cod's "Big Beach." Burke's report covers the concept behind the new park, ocean design, growth challenges, alliances, final battles, successes and failures, and more.

Dr. Mark Borrelli explores the history of Cape Cod and how current coastal conditions have shaped its evolution. He will also present current research and discuss how storms and sea level rise are changing the coast today and what is expected in the future.
Doctor. Borrelli joined the Center for Ocean Studies (CCS) in 2009 and serves as director of the Laboratory of Environmental and Ecosystem Processes, or CaPE Lab, a collaborative research project between CCS and the School of Ecology at UMass Boston.
On Friday, September 15, from 9:30 a.m. to midnight, the Cape Cod National Seashore Atlantic Science and Training Center (CCNS) will host its eleventh annual Science at Seashore Symposium in hybrid mode. People can participate in person in the Salt Pond Visitor Center auditorium or online through Microsoft Teams. The event is free and open to the public. This program is presented to scientific groups and experts who present their natural and cultural research projects in the sea.
